I think the Yorkshire Engine Company’s Janus type diesel is the archetypical steelworks locomotive – in my mind anyway. It’s having spent time at Scunthorpe Steelworks which has embedded the type in my subconscious so much.
To aid building of the Judith Edge and conversion work Oxford Rail/Golden Valley ready to run model, these views of the preserved Appleby-Frodingham Steel Company number 1 (YEC Works No. 2877), and others, at Scunthorpe Steelworks should prove useful I hope.
A close up of the heat shield. These, I’m told, are to keep heat from hot loads away from the locomotive’s radiator, to prevent unnecessary overheating.
The front, the massive buffer beams really add to the character of these engines.
A deliberately overexposed photo to pick out details of the break gear.
The heat shield from the side – note how the front handrail’s outer portions are angled towards the heat shield.
Details of the area under the cab.

Janus Details – Handrails. These are fabricated so the horizontal and vertical pieces lie in the same plane, very tedious and awkward to fabricate in model form!
