The Wider Steel Industry

Skinningrove Iron and Steel Works: Its History, Railways and Locomotives
Cliff Shepherd

This book which focuses on Skinningrove is a fascinating volume – although it doesn’t cover the industry in North Lincolnshire, it’s very useful indeed. If you wanted to create a layout in a fictional setting the story of Skinningrove is very interesting – its growth, its development and its decline. It’s this last area which interests me as the steelworks at Alkborough will mimic this – by the nineteen nineties it would no longer be producing its own steel, relying on blooms and billets being brought to the site. This contraction and how it influences the rail traffic is truly fascinating.

For those with a wider interest in industrial railways or even railways in general this superbly produced book is highly recommended!
